All Terrain vs Mud Terrain

This is a question that we hear quite often here at the shop. There are several things to consider when purchasing a tire for your vehicle. Obviously this post is addressing vehicles used on and off road. For most drivers the All Terrain will fit their needs. This includes your weekend warriors who are using their ride as a daily driver. The mud terrain tire is more capable off road but may not fit all needs of all drivers. Read on below to find out why

A/T Tires

Its right in the name “ALL” Terrain. While this tire can do almost everything you would want it has limitations. To use a basketball analogy we all know lets use Michael Jordan. We all know MJ was one of the best all around players in history. However if you asked him to play center against 7 footers, he would be dunked on repeatedly. Like MJ this tire is great in almost every category, but does have some weaknesses while compared to the Mud Terrain.

Pros of the All Terrain tire over Mud Terrain

  • Siping to improve traction and dissipate heat
  • Backed by Tread life warranties
  • Quieter, More comfortable ride
  • Higher Speed rating
  • Closer tread blocks allowing more contact with the road
  • Better fuel economy
  • Improved performance in Snow

M/T Tires

Mud Terrain tires unlike All Terrain tires are specialized for use off road. While they can be used on road there are several weaknesses compared to an All Terrain Tire. This tire is not the first choice for someone who spends alot of time on road as they can ride rough, not perform equally in rain or snow, and can be really noisy especially if not rotated often or when paired with worn suspension components. It really is an excellent option for off roading in mud and challenging terrain.
